Tooth Pain & Toothache
Urgent
Tooth pain always has a cause. The longer you wait, the more complex the treatment.
Sharp pain when biting, spontaneous throbbing, or pain that wakes you at night — these are signs of decay, infection, or a cracked tooth that needs professional attention today, not next week.
- Throbbing or sharp tooth pain
- Pain on biting
- Sensitivity to heat that lingers
- Swelling in jaw or gum
In India: Toothache is one of the leading reasons Indians delay seeing a dentist, often managing with painkillers for weeks. By the time treatment is sought, a simple filling has become a root canal.
Treatment: Root canal treatment, dental fillings, or crowns — depending on severity.
Sensitive Teeth
See a Dentist
Wincing at your morning chai is not just inconvenient — it is a warning sign.
Sharp pain triggered by hot, cold, or sweet foods is called dentine hypersensitivity. It signals that your protective enamel is compromised. Sensitivity toothpaste masks the pain; professional treatment addresses the cause.
- Sharp pain from hot or cold
- Pain when brushing specific areas
- Discomfort with sweet foods
- Cold air causing tooth pain
In India: Sensitivity is extremely common among Indians who consume acidic foods like tamarind, lemon, and citrus daily, combined with hard brushing — a damaging combination for enamel.
Treatment: Fluoride varnish, dental bonding, gum grafting, or custom night guard.
Bleeding Gums
Don't Ignore
Healthy gums never bleed. If yours do, it means infection is present.
Bleeding while brushing is the most common sign of gingivitis — a bacterial infection of the gums. Left untreated it progresses to periodontitis, destroying the bone that holds your teeth. It is painless until teeth start loosening.
- Blood on toothbrush or floss
- Persistent bad breath
- Red or swollen gums
- Gums pulling away from teeth
In India: Gum disease affects an estimated 80–90% of Indian adults. The common mistake is to brush less around bleeding areas — the exact opposite of what helps.
Treatment: Professional cleaning, deep scaling, laser gum surgery, or flap surgery for advanced cases.
Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Seek Assessment
If mints and mouthwash have not fixed it — there is an underlying cause that needs diagnosis.
Persistent bad breath despite brushing is caused by tongue bacteria, gum disease, tooth decay, dry mouth, or systemic conditions. 80–90% of bad breath originates in the mouth — and almost all of it is treatable with the right approach.
- Persistent unpleasant mouth odour
- Dry mouth throughout the day
- Thick coating on the back of tongue
- Sour or metallic taste
In India: Tobacco — in all its forms including paan, gutka, and cigarettes — is the single biggest cause of persistent halitosis in India and also dramatically raises oral cancer risk.
Treatment: Tongue cleaning instruction, professional cleaning, treatment of decay or gum disease, and saliva stimulation.
Food Lodgement Between Teeth
Get Checked
Needing a toothpick after every meal is not normal — it means something has changed in that area.
When food consistently gets stuck in the same spot, there is usually a structural reason — an open contact between teeth, a faulty filling, a missing tooth causing drift, or gum loss. Chronic food packing causes cavities and bone loss.
- Food stuck after every meal
- Gum bleeding in one specific area
- Mild ache between teeth after eating
- Visible gap where none existed before
In India: Many Indians routinely use toothpicks after every meal without realising this is a sign of a dental problem — and that aggressive toothpick use further damages the gum tissue.
Treatment: Replacement of faulty fillings or crowns, dental implants, bonding, or orthodontic treatment.
Cracked or Fractured Tooth
Urgent
A cracked tooth only gets worse over time — it will never heal on its own.
Sharp pain when biting that immediately goes away when you release pressure is the classic sign of a cracked tooth. Cracks are often invisible on X-rays and difficult to locate. Early treatment with a crown can save a tooth that untreated will eventually split.
- Sharp pain when biting, relieved when releasing
- Intermittent pain — hard to locate
- Sensitivity to cold that lingers
- Visible chip or broken piece
In India: Biting on ice, paan masala, hard candy, and bones from meat dishes are among the most common causes of tooth cracks we see in patients in Bangalore.
Treatment: Dental crown, root canal then crown, or extraction and implant for split teeth.
Forwardly Placed / Protruding Teeth
Plan Treatment
Buck teeth are not just a cosmetic issue — they are at higher risk of fracture and affect bite function.
Protruding upper front teeth affect confidence, make it harder to close the lips, and are significantly more likely to chip or fracture in a fall or accident. Orthodontic treatment corrects the underlying tooth or jaw position — not just masks the appearance.
- Upper front teeth jutting forward when viewed from the side
- Difficulty biting into food
- Lips that cannot close comfortably
- Self-consciousness when smiling
In India: Habits common in Indian childhood — prolonged thumb-sucking, pacifier use beyond age 3, and mouth breathing from untreated adenoid enlargement — are leading causes of dental protrusion.
Treatment: Invisalign clear aligners, fixed braces, or functional appliances for growing children.
Jaw Pain & TMJ Disorder
Specialist Care
Jaw pain is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed conditions — often treated as an ear infection or migraine.
Clicking, popping, locking, pain on chewing, headaches on waking, or earache with no ear infection — these are signs of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. GardenCity Smiles is one of the very few clinics in Bangalore with an American Board Certified Orofacial Pain Specialist.
- Jaw clicking or popping
- Earache with no ear infection
- Morning headaches or jaw soreness
- Limited mouth opening
In India: Stress-related clenching during work and sleep is extremely prevalent in Bangalore’s working population. Many patients don’t realise they grind their teeth until significant damage has occurred.
Treatment: Custom occlusal splint, physiotherapy, Botox for muscle pain, or arthrocentesis for joint-based TMD.
Wisdom Tooth Pain
Act Before It Worsens
Wisdom tooth pain almost always comes back — and the next episode is usually worse.
Most people do not have enough jaw space for wisdom teeth to erupt properly. A partially erupted wisdom tooth traps food and bacteria under the gum, causing infection (pericoronitis) repeatedly. A horizontal impacted wisdom tooth silently damages the adjacent molar for years without symptoms.
- Pain behind the last molar
- Difficulty opening the mouth fully
- Swollen red gum at the back of the mouth
- Radiating pain to the ear or jaw
In India: Wisdom tooth problems typically begin between 18 and 25 years — a critical time for many Indians who are in college or starting careers. Early assessment and proactive extraction prevents recurrent painful episodes.
Treatment: Simple or surgical wisdom tooth extraction, with CBCT 3D imaging for complex cases near the inferior alveolar nerve.
Cosmetic Dental Concerns
Book a Smile Consult
Staining, gaps, chips, and uneven teeth — modern cosmetic dentistry can address all of these conservatively.
Yellow or stained teeth, gaps between front teeth, chipped enamel, gummy smile, or teeth that look uneven or short — these are cosmetic concerns that affect confidence and social wellbeing. At GardenCity Smiles we start with the most conservative option: bonding before veneers, whitening before crowns.
- Yellow, brown, or stained teeth
- Chipped or worn-down teeth
- Visible gaps between front teeth
- Too much gum showing when you smile
In India: Tea, coffee, and tobacco use contribute to significant tooth staining in India. Many patients are not aware that professional whitening can dramatically brighten teeth safely in a single appointment.
Treatment: Professional whitening, composite bonding, porcelain veneers, Invisalign, or laser gummy smile correction.
Common Questions
Questions Patients Ask Before Booking
Straight answers from Dr. Deepthi Kalahasti.
I have dental pain. How do I know if it is serious?
Any toothache lasting more than 24–48 hours, or accompanied by swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing, needs same-day dental attention. Call us on 9663823300. For mild intermittent sensitivity without swelling, book an appointment within the week.
My gums bleed when I brush. Should I stop brushing that area?
No — do the opposite. Bleeding gums signal bacterial infection. The area needs more cleaning, not less. See a dentist promptly and in the meantime continue brushing gently but thoroughly. Stopping brushing allows more plaque to accumulate and worsens the infection.
Can I just take antibiotics for my tooth infection?
Antibiotics reduce infection temporarily but cannot cure dental problems. A tooth infection originates inside the tooth or in a periodontal pocket — areas antibiotics cannot fully reach. Without treating the cause (through root canal, extraction, or deep cleaning), the infection returns. Antibiotics alone are never a definitive treatment.
How much does dental treatment cost at GardenCity Smiles?
We provide a written treatment plan with all costs before starting. Treatment costs depend on what is needed — a simple filling is very affordable; implants and full-mouth rehabilitation are larger investments. Early treatment is always less expensive than treating the same problem after it has worsened. We do not believe in unnecessary treatment.
I am very anxious about dental visits. What can you do to help?
We understand — dental anxiety is very common. At GardenCity Smiles, we explain every step before it happens, never rush, and use the most comfortable local anaesthesia techniques available. Many patients who describe themselves as terrified of dentists tell us their visit here was far easier than expected. Book a consultation first — it is just a conversation.
