Cosmetic Dental Concerns
Staining, Gaps, Chips, Uneven Teeth & Gummy Smiles — What Can Be Done
- Yelahanka, Bangalore | GardenCity Smiles
Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. Cosmetic dental concerns — discolouration, gaps, chipped teeth, uneven gum lines, and misalignment — affect confidence, social interaction, and how people perceive you professionally. At GardenCity Smiles, we offer conservative, modern solutions that transform smiles without unnecessary intervention.
- Cosmetic dental concerns rarely need urgent care, but early treatment is always simpler and produces better results.
- Key Signs to Watch For
- Yellow, brown, or grey tooth discolouration that makes you hesitant to smile
- Visible gaps or spaces between teeth — especially between the upper front teeth
- Chipped, cracked, or worn-down teeth that look uneven
- Teeth that appear too short — either worn down or hidden under excess gum tissue
- Excessive gum showing when you smile — called a gummy smile
- Uneven or asymmetric gum line making teeth appear different heights
Patient Education
Understanding This Condition
Cosmetic dentistry covers any dental treatment that improves the appearance of your teeth, gums, or overall smile. Unlike functional treatments that fix pain or disease, cosmetic procedures address colour, shape, size, alignment, and proportion.
However, the line between cosmetic and functional is not always clear. Chipped teeth affect both appearance and function. Gaps between teeth cause food impaction. Misaligned teeth are harder to clean and more prone to gum disease and decay. So many cosmetic concerns have real health implications too — and good cosmetic dentistry always considers both.
At GardenCity Smiles, we always recommend the most conservative effective solution. Before veneers, we consider bonding. Before orthodontics, we assess whether minor recontouring achieves the same result. No over-treatment — ever.
Signs & Symptoms
How to Recognise This Condition
Even mild symptoms warrant professional evaluation — early treatment is always simpler and less costly.
- Crooked, rotated, or crowded front teeth affecting the smile line
- One or two teeth noticeably darker than the rest — often after trauma or root canal
- Old grey or silver amalgam fillings visible when you smile
- Teeth that appear too small, creating a 'weak' smile
- Pus between teeth and gums when you press the gum
- Tooth sensitivity due to root exposure from recession
Root Causes
Why This Happens
Understanding the cause is the first step to choosing the right treatment and preventing recurrence.
- Extrinsic staining — tea, coffee, turmeric, pan masala, tobacco, and red wine stain the outer enamel surface over time
- Intrinsic discolouration — fluorosis (excess fluoride during childhood), tetracycline antibiotics, or trauma causing internal darkening
- Enamel erosion from acidic foods, carbonated drinks, or acid reflux wearing teeth thinner and exposing darker dentine
- Genetics — tooth size, shape, spacing, and colour are significantly inherited
- Trauma — a knocked or chipped tooth, or internal bleeding causing a tooth to turn dark
- Gum recession exposing yellow root surfaces and creating uneven appearance
- Prolonged orthodontic treatment or poor oral hygiene leaving white spot lesions on enamel
- Ageing — enamel naturally thins and yellows; teeth may also chip or crack with age
- Missing teeth causing adjacent teeth to drift and creating visible gaps or shifts in the smile
- Old, deteriorating amalgam or composite fillings that have stained, chipped, or darkened
Treatment Options
How We Treat This at GardenCity Smiles
All treatments are explained fully during your consultation. We always recommend the most conservative effective option first.
Professional Teeth Whitening
In-office teeth whitening using carbamide or hydrogen peroxide gel lightens teeth by 4–8 shades in approximately 60 minutes. Take-home whitening trays with professional-strength gel are also available for gradual whitening at your convenience. We perform shade analysis before and after to track your results. Note: whitening only works on natural tooth structure — not on crowns, veneers, or composite.
Composite Bonding
Composite bonding is the most conservative cosmetic procedure available. A tooth-coloured resin is applied directly to the tooth surface, sculpted to the correct shape, and polished to a high sheen — all in a single appointment with no drilling in most cases. Used for: chipped teeth, minor gaps, misshapen teeth, and stained areas that don't whiten. Lasts 5–8 years with good care and can be repaired easily.
Porcelain Veneers
Veneers are ultra-thin porcelain shells bonded to the front surface of teeth. They can change colour, shape, size, and alignment dramatically and deliver a permanent, natural-looking result. A small amount of enamel is removed to make room (this is irreversible — the tooth will always need a veneer thereafter). Veneers are the gold standard for significant cosmetic transformation and last 12–20 years. At GardenCity Smiles, veneer design is done with a diagnostic wax-up so you see the result before any preparation begins.
Invisalign Clear Aligners
When the cosmetic concern is misalignment — crooked, crowded, or spaced teeth — orthodontic treatment addresses the actual position of the teeth rather than just masking it. Invisalign clear aligners are virtually invisible, removable, and achieve the same results as braces for most cases. We are a certified Invisalign provider at GardenCity Smiles.
Laser Crown Lengthening (Gummy Smile Correction)
A gummy smile — where more than 3–4 mm of gum shows above the upper front teeth — is corrected by removing excess gum tissue. At GardenCity Smiles, we use laser crown lengthening for this procedure: precise, virtually bloodless, with no sutures in most cases and rapid healing. The new gum line is planned with you before the procedure so you know exactly what to expect.
Tooth-Coloured Fillings (Replacing Old Amalgam)
Old silver (amalgam) fillings are visible when you smile or laugh. Replacing them with tooth-coloured composite or ceramic restorations is one of the quickest cosmetic improvements — and it also eliminates the small ongoing mercury exposure from ageing amalgam fillings.
Single Tooth Whitening (Internal Bleaching)
When a single tooth has become darker than its neighbours — usually following trauma or root canal treatment — internal bleaching places a whitening agent inside the tooth. This specifically addresses intrinsic discolouration that external whitening cannot reach. Very effective for isolated darkened teeth.
Smile Makeover (Combined Treatment Plan)
When multiple cosmetic concerns exist together — discolouration, misalignment, chips, and proportion issues — a smile makeover combines treatments into one coordinated plan sequenced for the best overall result. At GardenCity Smiles, smile makeovers begin with a comprehensive assessment and digital smile design before any treatment starts.
In-Depth
What Every Patient Should Know
One of the most important things to understand about cosmetic dentistry is this: there is no universal ‘right’ smile. The goal is a smile that looks natural for your face — appropriate tooth-to-gum ratio, colour that suits your skin tone, and proportions that complement your facial structure. A smile that looks natural and healthy will always be more attractive than one that looks overdone.
The second principle: start with the most conservative option. Many patients who come in wanting veneers actually need only composite bonding — a reversible, quick, and much more affordable option that achieves an excellent result. We always assess whether a simpler approach achieves what you are looking for before recommending irreversible treatment.
Digital Smile Design at GardenCity Smiles: Before any cosmetic work begins, we use digital photographs and planning software to show you the intended result. A diagnostic wax-up in stone models lets you see and feel the proposed changes in 3D. You have full input into the design — nothing is done without your approval.
A note on teeth whitening products sold online and in pharmacies: most over-the-counter whitening products in India contain peroxide concentrations that are too low to produce visible results. The ones that do contain effective concentrations are often used without a shade guide or professional assessment, risking uneven whitening and increased sensitivity. Professional whitening at GardenCity Smiles produces predictable, monitored results with post-whitening fluoride treatment to manage sensitivity.
Prevention
How to Prevent This
Prevention is always better — and far less costly — than treatment. These evidence-based habits can significantly reduce your risk.
- Reduce tea, coffee, and dark-coloured beverages — or drink them through a straw to limit tooth contact
- Quit tobacco in all forms — it causes severe staining and dramatically increases gum disease and oral cancer risk
- Brush twice daily with a whitening fluoride toothpaste — it maintains colour but cannot reverse existing staining
- Visit GardenCity Smiles every 6 months for professional cleaning and polishing to remove surface stains before they set
- Wear a mouthguard during contact sports to prevent chips and fractures
- Address acid reflux (GERD) with your doctor — stomach acid erosion is a major cause of enamel loss and yellowing
- Replace old amalgam fillings proactively rather than waiting for them to deteriorate
- Consider orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth — straight teeth are easier to clean and less prone to staining
When to See a Dentist
Do not wait if you experience any of these — early intervention always leads to better outcomes and lower treatment cost.
- You avoid smiling or feel self-conscious about your teeth in social or professional situations
- A tooth has chipped or fractured — even a small chip should be assessed to prevent it worsening
- One tooth has become visibly darker than the rest after a knock or root canal
- You notice white spots on enamel — these can be treated before they progress to cavities
- You want teeth whitening — professional whitening is safer and more effective than OTC products
- Your gums show excessively when you smile and this bothers you

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers from Dr. Deepthi Kalahasti and the GardenCity Smiles team.
Yes — professional teeth whitening is safe for all teeth regardless of natural colour. Indian teeth often have a naturally warmer (more yellow) baseline tone. Professional whitening achieves excellent brightening while keeping the result looking natural and appropriate for your skin tone. We perform a full assessment before whitening to check for cavities, sensitivity, or gum disease that should be addressed first.
Porcelain veneer costs in Bangalore vary depending on the material (ceramic vs zirconia), the number of teeth, and the complexity of the case. At GardenCity Smiles, we provide a detailed written cost breakdown after your assessment. We believe in transparent pricing — no hidden charges. Composite bonding, which achieves excellent results for many patients, is significantly more affordable.
Teeth whitening removes extrinsic (surface) staining and lightens the natural tooth colour. It does not work on intrinsic staining from fluorosis, tetracycline, or internal darkening after trauma — these need veneers or internal bleaching. It also does not change the colour of crowns, bridges, or composite fillings. We assess your staining type before recommending a whitening approach.
For minor cosmetic changes — small chips, slight gaps, and surface irregularities — composite bonding delivers excellent results at a fraction of the cost and with no enamel removal. For more significant changes in colour or shape, or for cases requiring durability over 10+ years, porcelain veneers produce a superior and longer-lasting result. We recommend the most conservative option that achieves your goal.
It depends on the size of the gap. Small gaps (1–2 mm) can be closed beautifully with composite bonding in a single appointment — no braces, no drilling, completely reversible. Larger gaps (3 mm+) are better treated with Invisalign or braces, which move the teeth to their correct position rather than building material onto them. We assess the gap size and recommend the most suitable approach.
A simple smile makeover — whitening combined with bonding — can be completed in 1–2 appointments over 2–3 weeks. A comprehensive makeover involving veneers, Invisalign, and gum work may take 6–12 months. We plan the full sequence upfront so you know exactly what is involved and how long each phase takes.
