What is Periodontal Flap Surgery?
Periodontal flap surgery (also called open flap debridement) is a surgical treatment for advanced gum disease that has not responded to deep cleaning. The dentist gently folds back the gum tissue — like opening a flap — to directly access the tooth root and the underlying bone. This allows more thorough removal of bacterial deposits from deep pockets and reshaping of irregular bone defects. The gum flap is then sutured back in place.
